10 Books Every College Student Should Read

Occasionally, you lift your face from your college textbooks and want to forget about your physics professor. Instead of wasting your time browsing the internet senselessly, try reading any (or all) of these books instead.

1. 1984
George Orwell's concepts on his novel cover deception by officers, secret surveillance, and a totalitarian state which manipulates the past.

2. The Adventures of Augie March
This work by Saul Bellow is a coming-of-age novel set in the backdrop of the Great Depression. The author used contrasting matters such as poverty and wealth, and estrangement and belonging as the protagonist grows from a boy to a man.

3. Atlas Shrugged
The book expresses the author Ayn Rand's ideas about human achievement and existence, as well as themes concerning individuals, businesses, and the government.

4. Brave New World
This is a novel by Aldous Huxley set in futuristic London (around 2540 AD). If you have time to put down your college textbooks, take time to read this novel which ranked fifth in Modern Library's 100 Best English-Language Novels of the 20th century.

5. The Count of Monte Cristo
Plotted against the setting of historical significance, this classic adventure story by Alexander Dumas revolved around themes of justice, revenge, guilt, and forgiveness.

6. The Handmaid's Tale
Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale depicts a dark near future where women are treated and used merely as reproductive tools with no rights or property. The novel received a number of awards after its publication in 1985.

7. The Lord of the Flies
William Golding received a Nobel Prize for his novel narrating the story of a group of boys deserted on an island. Often part of college textbooks and readings, the book is full of allegories pertaining to society, government, and struggle for power.

8. The Picture of Dorian Gray
Oscar Wilde's novel portrays a young man who never ages and who, as a result, abused his youth and committed sins. Deemed as a classic gothic fiction, the novel revolved around beauty, power, and responsibility.

9. Slaughterhouse-Five
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s novel tells the story of a soldier who thinks aliens abducted him and that he can time travel. Ranked by Modern Library as 18th Greatest English Novel of the 20th Century, the novel teaches readers how life can be meaningless and meaningful at the same time.

10. The Sun Also Rises
Referred to as Ernest Hemingway's greatest work, the novel encompasses the themes of women and love, men and masculinity, nature, and even bullfighting.
